Patella cutting guides are instruments used by orthopedic surgeons during total knee replacement surgery. At Precision Metal Machining, Inc., when we were asked to manufacture them, our initial challenge was to coordinate the logistics of outsourcing and in-house capabilities to complete the orders in a timely fashion for the customer. This 29-piece assembly required coatings, overmolding on the handles, and the sourcing of parts (e.g. springs), all while accommodating suppliers' lead times—without compromising the client's expectations. To manufacture these instruments, all of our CNC equipment, as well as manual equipment, were used: CNC mills, lathes, and EDMs. Made from 17-2 stainless steel and titanium, the 11" long guides received a finish of Ra 32 prior to dimensional and aesthetic inspections. ISO 13485:2003 industry standards were met as well as demanding tolerances of ±.0005". We currently produce 1,000 of these patella cutting guides annually for delivery to a New Jersey customer.
